About This Camera
Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park, stretching ten miles long and reaching depths of nearly 500 feet in a glacially carved trough on the west side of the park. This live camera captures the lake's surface, the surrounding peaks, and the constantly changing Montana weather that sweeps across the Continental Divide. The lake's water is famously clear and cold, fed by snowmelt and glacier runoff from the surrounding mountains.
The view changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings rising water from melting snow, with mountains still wearing heavy winter snowpack. Summer days are typically calm in the mornings, with afternoon winds and occasional thunderstorms over the peaks. The lake reflects the surrounding mountains in mirror-like calm at dawn — one of the most photographed conditions in the park. Autumn turns the larch trees a brilliant gold against the dark conifer forests. Winter brings deep snow, ice fishing on protected coves, and the rare chance to see the lake fully frozen.
Lake McDonald's pebble beaches are famous for their unusually colorful stones — red and green argillites, mudstones, and quartzites tumbled smooth by the lake's waves. The colors come from iron oxidation patterns in the ancient rocks of the Belt Supergroup, some of the oldest exposed sediments in North America. Bears, both grizzly and black, are regularly seen along the lake shore, especially during berry season.
Nearby attractions include Apgar Village at the foot of the lake, the historic Lake McDonald Lodge, McDonald Falls, the Trail of the Cedars short hike, and the start of the Going-to-the-Sun Road — one of the most spectacular mountain drives in North America. The road typically opens to vehicles in late June or early July depending on snow clearance.
