Ketchikan Airport WeatherCam

Ketchikan (PAKT)

About This Camera

Ketchikan International Airport (PAKT) sits on Gravina Island across the Tongass Narrows from the city of Ketchikan — one of only two airports in the U.S. accessible solely by a state-run vehicle ferry. The famous "bridge to nowhere" was the proposed link between the city and the airport; it was never built, and the seven-minute ferry crossing remains the only way to get from the airport to downtown. This FAA WeatherCam captures the maritime weather that defines Southeast Alaska aviation — fog rolling in from the Pacific, rain (Ketchikan averages 141 inches of rainfall per year, among the highest of any U.S. city), and the dramatic cloud ceilings that can drop from VFR to IFR within an hour. Alaska Airlines is the primary carrier with daily 737 service. The Inside Passage cruise season (May through September) brings additional charter and ferry traffic. The airport is the entry point for visitors to Misty Fjords National Monument, Saxman Native Village, Creek Street (Ketchikan's historic boardwalk neighborhood built over a salmon creek), and the dozens of remote lodges in the surrounding Tongass National Forest. Ketchikan calls itself the "Salmon Capital of the World" — all five Pacific salmon species spawn in the surrounding watersheds. The Tongass Narrows view from the airport area is one of the most photographed in Southeast Alaska, with fishing fleets, float planes, the Alaska Marine Highway ferries, and the occasional cruise ship all visible from the same vantage. Float plane operators use the protected water for hundreds of daily takeoffs and landings during summer.
