Cordova Airport WeatherCam

Cordova (PACV)

About This Camera

Cordova Airport (PACV) sits at the eastern edge of Prince William Sound, accessible only by air or by the Alaska Marine Highway ferry. The FAA WeatherCam here captures the dramatic weather and mountain backdrop that define this small fishing town. The Chugach Mountains rise immediately behind Cordova; the Copper River Delta — one of the largest shorebird staging areas in the Pacific — stretches east of town; and the open Gulf of Alaska is just to the south. PACV is served by Alaska Airlines (daily 737 service to Anchorage during summer; reduced winter schedule) and by Cordova Air for floatplane service to the surrounding lodges and the remote villages of Tatitlek, Chenega Bay, and the Copper River corridor. The airport is most active during the salmon season, when commercial fishermen, processors, and biologists fill flights in and out. Cordova is the home of Copper River salmon — the king, sockeye, and coho runs that begin every May 15 and command premium prices in restaurants nationwide. The annual Copper River Wild Salmon Festival every July celebrates the fishery. The Cordova Salmon Jam and Cordova Iceworm Festival in February (yes, in February — Iceworm is one of Alaska's quirkiest winter festivals) round out the cultural calendar. Weather here is wet maritime — annual rainfall averages 167 inches at the airport, among the highest in the U.S. Snow accumulation in winter is heavy. Glacier-fed cold downflow winds (taku winds) can rip down from the Chugach with little warning. The Copper River Delta birding season every spring (late April through mid-May) draws birders to see millions of shorebirds — sandpipers, plovers, dunlin — staging for migrations to nesting grounds.
