DECEMBER 31 · MIDNIGHT AROUND THE WORLD

New Year’s Eve Live Cams 2027: Times Square Ball Drop and Midnight Around the World

New Year takes 26 hours to cross the planet. It starts in Kiritimati, in the middle of the Pacific, at Dec 31, 10:00 UTC (Dec 31, 5:00 AM ET), and ends on two uninhabited islands south-west of Hawaiʻi on the morning of January 1. Below is when midnight reaches each time zone, in your own time with a countdown, the Times Square ball drop hour by hour, and the live cameras on Port of Cams in the cities that celebrate.

The first midnight of 2027 is at Dec 31, 10:00 UTC (Dec 31, 5:00 AM ET), in Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Kiribati.

All times below are in UTC and US Eastern time; with JavaScript on, each one is also shown in your own time zone.

When midnight arrives, zone by zone

Midnight on January 1, 2027, from the first place on Earth to the last. Each row is computed from that place’s time zone rules, so daylight saving time is already accounted for: Sydney and Auckland are in summer time on the night, Europe and North America are not.

  1. Dec 31, 10:00 UTC Dec 31, 5:00 AM ET

    Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Kiribati UTC+14

The first inhabited place to reach the new year. Kiribati moved its eastern Line Islands to the west side of the date line in 1995, so the whole country shares one calendar day.

No live camera here on Port of Cams.

  2. Dec 31, 10:15 UTC Dec 31, 5:15 AM ET

    Chatham Islands, New Zealand UTC+13:45

No live camera here on Port of Cams.

  4. Dec 31, 13:00 UTC Dec 31, 8:00 AM ET

The Times Square ball drop

Times Square live stream thumbnail

Times Square — Live 4K Cam

Times Square, New York, NY

EarthCam’s live 4K view of Times Square, its billboards and its crowds. The ball sits on the flagpole atop One Times Square, at the south end of the square.

For the countdown, the music and the ball itself up close, the official webcast below is the one to have open.

The ball has been lowered from the flagpole of One Times Square, the former Times Tower, since the end of 1907. The current one, the Constellation Ball, is the ninth: 12.5 feet across, 12,350 pounds and covered in 5,280 Waterford crystals, it was introduced in November 2025. Here is the night in New York, as the Times Square Alliance describes it:

  1. From 3 pm ETThe viewing areas open, first come, first served, through the access points on Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Entry is free and no ticket is needed for the street celebration.
  2. About 6 pm ETThe ball is raised to the top of the flagpole on One Times Square, and the Alliance’s own webcast begins.
  3. Through the eveningLive performances on stages in the square. Lineups are announced by the organisers closer to the night, so we do not list them here.
  4. 11:59 pm ETThe ball starts its 60-second descent down the flagpole, and the crowd counts down the last ten seconds.
  5. Midnight ETThe ball reaches the bottom, the new year’s numerals light up and confetti falls over the square.

How to watch the ball drop live online, free

  • The official webcast. The Times Square Alliance streams the night on its own site from 6 pm ET, without commercials, with a separate accessible stream with open captions and ASL interpretation.
  • A live camera on the square. The Times Square cam on Port of Cams shows the square itself, with no commentary.
  • Mind the delay. Every stream runs at least several seconds behind real time. If you want to count down with the crowd exactly, use a clock: midnight in New York is Jan 1, 05:00 UTC.
  • Outside the US Eastern zone? The ball reaches the bottom at midnight ET, which is 9 pm on December 31 in Los Angeles, 7 pm in Honolulu and 5 am on January 1 in London.

If you are going in person

  • The street celebration is free and needs no ticket. The Alliance says the viewing areas open at 3 pm and fill on a first come, first served basis, through access points on Sixth and Eighth Avenues.
  • Bags are searched. Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas and alcohol are not allowed, and there are no portable toilets in the square.
  • Dress for a long night standing outdoors in a New York winter. Check the Alliance’s FAQ in December for this year’s details, which can change.

We have no live camera in Auckland, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Dubai, Paris, Rio or Las Vegas at the moment, so those cities appear on the timeline without one rather than with a camera from somewhere else.
