Carnival 2027: the dates

Mardi Gras moves with Easter. Easter 2027 is Sunday, March 28, 2027, so Ash Wednesday is 46 days before it and Fat Tuesday the day before that. These dates are computed from that rule, and the countdowns are to midnight in New Orleans.

  1. Twelfth Night: Carnival season begins

    Wednesday, January 6, 2027in 70 days 10 h

January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, opens the season every year. Traditionally the first parades roll that evening: walking krewes in the French Quarter and the Phunny Phorty Phellows on the St. Charles streetcar line.

  2. Lundi Gras

    Monday, February 8, 2027in 103 days 10 h

The Monday before Mardi Gras: traditionally a night of big Uptown parades.

  3. Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday)

    Tuesday, February 9, 2027in 104 days 10 h

The last day of Carnival and the biggest. Traditionally Zulu rolls in the morning and Rex follows; the French Quarter fills all day.

  4. Ash Wednesday

    Wednesday, February 10, 2027in 105 days 10 h

Lent begins and Carnival is over. Mardi Gras always falls 47 days before Easter, so it moves every year, between early February and early March.

New Orleans: Bourbon Street live

Both cameras are in the French Quarter. Parades through the Quarter are walking parades, so this is where to watch the street party, the costumes and the balconies rather than the big floats.

How the parade weeks usually run

Each krewe (the clubs that stage the parades) rolls on its own traditional day, but the 2027 lineup is not confirmed yet: the schedules published now are estimates built from past years, and the krewes confirm a few months before Carnival. So instead of 2027 dates, here is the traditional shape of the season.

  • Twelfth Night (January 6): the season opens with walking krewes in the French Quarter and the Phunny Phorty Phellows’ streetcar ride on St. Charles Avenue.
  • January into early February: parades on the weekends, many of them walking parades through the French Quarter and the Marigny, and parades in the suburbs.
  • The last two weeks: the big float parades roll Uptown on most nights, most of them along St. Charles Avenue toward Canal Street.
  • The last weekend: traditionally Endymion rolls in Mid-City on the Saturday and Bacchus Uptown on the Sunday night; on Lundi Gras, the Monday, Proteus and Orpheus.
  • Mardi Gras morning: traditionally Zulu, then Rex, with more parades following, while the French Quarter fills for the day.

For the confirmed schedule nearer the time, use the City of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras pages, its Routewise parade tracker, and the MardiGrasNewOrleans.com schedule, which marks its dates as estimates until the krewes confirm them.

On the route: the City’s rules and safety tips

If you are going in person, these come from the City of New Orleans, and most are set by City code:

  • Setting up: no ladders, chairs, coolers or other personal items on the public right-of-way (including the neutral ground) earlier than four hours before a parade; anything put out earlier may be removed. Don’t block intersections.
  • Ladders: no taller than 6 feet, free-standing, at least 6 feet back from the curb, never fastened together and never left out overnight.
  • Not allowed: tents, canopies, ropes or other enclosures; open flames; gas or diesel generators; upholstered furniture, scaffolding and platforms; confetti guns; Mylar balloons; unattended coolers; pets, except service animals.
  • During the parade: stay behind the barricades and out of the street, don’t cross between floats, don’t go after throws that land near a moving float, and don’t throw anything back at the riders: “throwbacks” carry a $250 fine.
  • Your group: agree on a meeting spot, and take a “safety selfie” at the start so you can show what everyone is wearing. There are lost child stations along the route; Routewise shows them, with restrooms and first aid stations.
  • Getting there: don’t drink and drive, and leave extra time: streets are full of people.
  • Help: call 911 in an emergency; report something suspicious on 504-821-2222.

Galveston, and Mobile

Galveston, Texas holds what its organisers call Texas’ largest Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras! Galveston runs January 29 to February 9, 2027, mostly in the downtown Entertainment District between 20th and 25th Streets, from Harborside Drive to Mechanic Street, with more parades on the Seawall. The district is ticketed on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the second Friday and Saturday; the second Sunday, Fat Tuesday and the Seawall parades are free. Our Strand camera looks over the heart of that district.

Mobile, Alabama has celebrated Carnival for more than 300 years, according to the Mobile Carnival Museum, which keeps a parade schedule. We have no live camera there on Port of Cams.
