Iliamna Airport WeatherCam

Iliamna (PAIL)

About This Camera

Iliamna Airport (PAIL) sits on the north shore of Lake Iliamna — the largest lake in Alaska and the eighth-largest in the United States by surface area. The FAA WeatherCam here monitors weather over one of the most remote regions of the state, the upper Bristol Bay watershed that produces the largest sockeye salmon runs in the world. PAIL serves the village of Iliamna (population around 80) plus a growing number of fishing lodges, hunting camps, and seasonal residences along the lake and on the Alaska Peninsula. The airport is best known to anglers as the gateway to the Kvichak River and Lake Iliamna sockeye fishery — one of the great freshwater fishing destinations on Earth. Iliamna Air Taxi, Iliamna Air, and seasonal charter operations fly fishermen to remote streams, lodges, and the broader Bristol Bay system. The Pebble Mine project, which proposes a massive copper-and-gold mine in the headwaters of Bristol Bay, has made the area a focal point of environmental and political attention. Weather here is dominated by the convergence of maritime and continental air masses over the Alaska Peninsula. Summer brings 18+ hours of daylight, intense fishing season, brown bear viewing at the Brooks Falls of nearby Katmai National Park, and the brief but spectacular wildflower bloom across the tundra. Winter brings near-darkness for several weeks around the solstice, ice fishing on the lake (which freezes by late November), and the quiet of an isolated wilderness community. Visitors arrive at Iliamna almost exclusively for fishing, bear viewing, hunting, or extreme wilderness adventure. Major nearby attractions include Lake Clark National Park to the north, Katmai National Park to the south, and the Wood-Tikchik State Park system.
