Kilauea — S2cam South Rift Zone

Kilauea, Usgs

About This Camera

A USGS camera (S2) on Kīlauea's Southwest Rift Zone, Hawaii Island, complementing the other rift-zone views in the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory array. The Southwest Rift runs from the summit caldera toward the Kaʻū Desert and the south coast, cutting through arid, gas-swept terrain. Eruptions here are less frequent than on the East Rift but have happened, so the rift is watched continuously for cracking, steaming, or new vents. The camera frames the bare lava landscape characteristic of this leeward flank. Within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park; Hawaii keeps one time zone all year.
